The Carinthian Duke’s Chair
The county of Carinthia (Carantania) was turned into a duchy by Emperor Otto II in the year 976. Confidants of the emperor became dukes and were raised to a princely rank. At the beginning, the dukes hardly ever visited their duchy. On the Zollfeld, a throne was set up in the open. The simple rectangular stone block with a shallow depression as a seat (west-facing throne) consists of conglomerate rock. The throne symbolised the presence of the duke.
