Carinthian Botanical Center

Botany is concerned with the research on plants. Among its most important emphases are the clarification of the composition of plants, their functional processes and life cycle, their affinity to similar plants, their ecology as well as the possibilities for usage. The Department of Botany of the State Museum of Carinthia fulfills its mission with its own field office, the Carinthia Botany Center. Located in the historical quarry of the city of Klagenfurt at the foot of the Kreuzbergl, there is the Botanical Garden, the Carinthian Herbarium and a botanical library. For researching plants, not only living plants are essential but also herbaria and specialist literature. Collections of plant fossils, woods, fruits, and biographical data enlarge the spectrum. Among the responsibilities of a botanical garden, in increasing measure are also the preservation of endangered species that in the best case scenario can be placed again in the wild, as well as conveying botanical issues to the visitors.
