Zoological Biodiversity Research in Carinthia
It is certainly a basic duty of the Zoology Department of the state museum to tend to the species diversity of the state. Surveying and documenting the local animal world, at least those groups covered by specialists, should be the foremost goal. The museum is also the only public institution where such information could come together.
Which groups are researched depends, of course, on the people involved and their special disciplines. With an estimated 30-40,000 animal species in the territory of the federal state, only a small partial aspect of each can be kept track of.
In the last century, the study of fauna was mostly done by private individuals, and at least parts of collections remain in the kärnten.museum. If at that time, the focus was on beetles, winged insects, centipedes and vertebrates, under the curator Dr. Paul Mildner, the focus shifted to mollusks. He left an extensive collection of native land and water snails and numerous publications about them to the state.
