In a settlement area of village-like structure in the community of Magdalensberg, this investigation area is to be evaluated as a positive example and experimental field for a near-natural garden.
A small, completely communal single-family home garden with vegetable beds and flower beds as well as fruit trees and ornamental shrubs, but also the necessary intensively used spaces distinguish the surroundings of the central buildings.All of the areas not directly used have been given back to natural succession as much as possible, but with some limitations. One of them is the twice-yearly cutting with the scythe to prevent the bushes from taking over. Abstaining from the use of lawn mowers or robot mowers as well as the use of fertilisers are required for the return of a dynamically developed floriferous plant cover over a period of several decades. With the plant diversity, over a very long time the sensitive diurnal butterflies also returned.
A light trap worked for 13 years, additional ascertainments and intensive daytime observation have resulted in identifying 1,100 different butterfly species in an area not affected by any special location.
