Mirror is not mirror. Other than in the western world, for example, the mirror has various meanings and uses in different cultures. That Archimedes, the Greek inventor and mathematician, set a Roman fleet on fire near his hometown of Syrcacus using a concave mirror in the year 214 B.C. has become one of the great myths of antiquity. The “Magic Mirror” made of bronze gives the impression of being transparent, and thus is called by the Chinese „théou kouang-kein“ (mirror that lets the light through”. Mirrors and mirroring are also special themes in modern art and range from Michelangelo and his Pistolettos „metrocubo d’infinito“ to Franz West, who together with Heimo Zobernig created the ironic but irritating art installation “auto sex”. The land art artist Robert Smithson opened new and bewildering perspectives with his series “onsite”. Also Eva Schlegel’s mirror sculpture “extension of public space” in the Parlament in Vienna or Magdalena Jetelovás “Orientation” at the 54th Art Biennale in Venice in 2011, are mirror images
of exceptional spatial interventions. “Sole Oriente” makes it possible to see things that are otherwise not in our range of vision, to stay in the picture, to get an idea of how to see others. “Sole Oriente” can be made into a source of (indirect) light by slightly turning its position, a magical island of light, exhilarating, mood and well-being influenced by it, relaxed, and a luminous sign of urban design in a private atmosphere.

THE SELF IN THE MIRROR – WAS WAHR IST
JOLANA SKACEL & IGOR SKACEL
Thinking about “what is real” could begin with a visualisation of nuances and would be important for knowledge and gains in knowledge. The visual perception of ourselves and, by extension, the creation of internal images begins with the recognition that we constitute and sharpen our sagacity by differentiation. The difference produces parts or perspectives and therein is manifested in our function of understanding. The body is above all an organ of agency for the relationships between the organism and its environment and for its relationships to other people. This interaction changes the body continually and influences it socially and culturally. The body is the location of a basal attitude toward life, of vitality, of satisfaction snd dissatisfaction. It is a space resonant of attitudes and feelings. At the same time it is also the center for perceptions, thoughts and activities. All conscious and unconscious experience are not only bound to the physical body as its biological basis but also to the body with its bodily subjectivity. The body as an intuitive sentient instrument of knowledge makes it possible for us to orient ourselves, to explore, to recognise and contextualise differences and nuances. We should advance to an atmospheric theory of the subtle. Contemplations on sphericity should bring veracity to the center.

KRIEGSGEWINNER
CYRIL HELNWEIN
Who profits from a conflict or crisis? Who earns money by selling weapons? Who profits from the resources, the land, or the valuables that are destroyed or stolen in a war? And who hides behind the coulisse and encourages both sides to murder? These questions must be answered in order to end the hostilities.

DISC 2023
MELITTA MOSCHIK
The mirror as image and medium of self-perception is an artefact of special importance. The form of a compact disc designed as a wall mirror takes up the aspect of the construction of an identity in both a virtual and an analogue space. Data determines the digital self. A look in the mirror allows the viewer to become conscious not only of their appearance but also of their virtual identity.

ROADSIDE SELF

…is an object group consisting of ceramics and polished metals that reference the classic form of mirror frames. Historically, these frames were often decorated with dense nature motifs. But instead of climbing plants and flowers, here is a nature revealing itself as demonstrably broken-up ground. Potholes at the edge of roads filled with rainwater serve as inspiration. These ostensibly temporary fragments show a self of transient reflection. One’s own “eight-billionth” (K. S. Robinson) in the middle of a human-made environment. Was lies in this supposed stillness and emptiness? Perhaps they are not only witnesses of our presence, but rather point to hidden liveliness and potential.

EVA
THERES CASSINI
The secret of seeing, consciousness, the “I”, the mind. “Whoever stands in front of a mirror with open eyes knows in general that they are looking in, because they know they are looking out.” “But who is that who is looking at me?…” If you stand in front of the MIRROR “EVA”, you are mirrored as a fragmented reflection in an aureola. Once you open your mind, a scaled down self-portrait looks back at you.
